    10 REASONS

10 reasons why every home should have an Essential Oil Diffuser

If you’re no stranger to natural living, you’ve probably already read a recommendation or two about using essential oil diffusers to improve your health, increase your energy, or to help you sleep better. The fact is, these handy little devices are great for all of those things and more. While the list of possible uses for a diffuser is quite extensive, we’ve narrowed it down to (what we consider to be) the top 10 reasons to own an essential oil diffuser and use it every day.

    1. Relaxation and Sleep
One of the best and most well-known uses for essential oils is their ability to help you unwind at the end of a hard day. While there are several other methods for getting your soothing oils from the bottle into your blood stream where they start to work their magic, the diffuser is by far the easiest and longest-lasting of them all. Keep one at the office to help you relax on your lunch break. Have a diffuser ready to go with the push of a button when you get home from work in the evening. Set one on the bedside table to help your mind and body relax so you can sleep better at night.

Recommended oils: chamomile, lavender, clary sage

    2. Mood Elevating
Just as a diffuser can help you to de-stress, they can also be used to create an energizing mood. This is not only great for when you’re feeling sad or depressed. You can use your diffuser to inspire high spirits during the holidays, to set a positive atmosphere for business meetings and social gatherings, to help you get moving on a slow morning, or even to create a romantic atmosphere for that special someone in your life.

Recommended oils: sweet orange, jasmine, rose, scotch pine, sandalwood, vanilla

    3. Ward Off Illness
Using a diffuser in your home or office is a great way to keep cold, flu, and other nasty illnesses at bay that works on three levels. First, many essential oils are powerfully anti-microbial and when introduced into the air in vapor form, the organic compounds within the oils come into direct contact with airborne pathogens before they can invade your body. Second, essential oils can also be used to boost the immune system. Last but not least, some diffusers also double as humidifiers which will help to keep your airways moist and healthy so you are less susceptible to any microbes that do make it into your body.

Recommended oils: eucalyptus, tea tree, sage, rosemary, grapefruit, lemon, thyme

    4. Helps You Breathe Easier
Essential oils are great for reducing inflammation and congestion in clogged airways to help you breathe more easily. If you are prone to allergies or other breathing disorders, try diffusing essential oils in the room (or rooms) of your home where you spend the most time. Just remember to keep a box of tissues handy as your nose and sinuses begin to open so you can also avoid that mad dash to the bathroom!

Recommended oils: peppermint, rosemary, lemon, eucalyptus

    5. Pain Relief
While most people will tell you to apply essential oils directly to the body for pain relief, you can also use a diffuser to extend their effects. This method is an excellent way to combat persistent pain such as that caused by headaches, sore joints, and overworked muscles. Apply peppermint, fennel, and wintergreen topically and dilute in a carrier oil if too strong for you.

Recommended oils: ginger, chamomile, lavender, eucalyptus, clary sage, rosemary, bergamot, peppermint, fennel, wintergreen

    6. Improve Cognitive Function
Using essential oils in a diffuser is a highly-effective way to super-charge your brain cells. Again, this effect works on multiple levels. First, many essential oils have adaptogenic qualities – meaning that they are soothing when you’re stressed, but they can also give you a pick-me-up when you’re feeling down or sluggish. By leveling out your mood, the oils in the air will help you to focus. Also, there are several essential oils which are known for their powerful ability to balance the body’s hormones. With regular use, these oils can actually help to heal the underlying causes responsible for hampering cognitive function.

Recommended oils: peppermint, eucalyptus, lemon, pine, vetiver

    7. Safer Alternative to Candles & Incense
If you have pets or small children, burning candles or incense can be a potentially hazardous practice. With an essential oil diffuser, you can reap the benefits of aromatherapy – and to much greater effect – without the risk of burns, wax spills, or other accidents.

    Recommended oils: any

    8. Repel Insects
Whether your problem is mosquitoes, house flies, fruit flies or moths, you can use essential oils in your diffuser to deter these critters from entering your home.
Recommended oils: clove, lemongrass, rosemary, cedarwood, peppermint

    9. Keeps You Cool
(While it might make you appear more eco-savvy to your friends and family, that’s not the kind of ‘cool’ we’re referring to.)

In the heat of the summer months, running the air conditioner all day and all night is a surefire way to send your electric bill through the roof. Instead, try diffusing your favorite crisp, cooling minty essential oils in the rooms where you spend the most time to help you beat the heat.

Recommended oils: peppermint, eucalyptus, spearmint, wintergreen

    10. Saves Money
So far we’ve covered the top nine reasons that owning a diffuser is an investment in your health and well-being, but it’s more than just that. With all of the versatile uses for essential oil diffusers around the home which ultimately lead to less doctor visits, lower electric bills, fewer cups of coffee and better productivity; you will soon discover that this handy little device is a money-saver as well!

    Featured Essential Oil: Cinnamon Bark

Cinnamon Bark is a powerful antibiotic for persons over the age of 6. It has even been shown clinically to eliminate MRSA (a potentially lethal internal Staph infection). A co-worker / fellow FNP mentioned that her mother was being treated in the hospital for two months and MRSA was not being eradicated with the strongest IV antibiotics. I gave her a bottle of Cinnamon Bark Essential Oil and directions to add 5 drops to a 20 oz bottle of juice and have her mother shake the bottle and sip some every hour. Well, the IV antibiotics may have finally kicked in, but she was out of the hospital in a week. Cinnamon Bark Essential Oil has been proven in a German study to eradicate MRSA. It is effective also on skin boils from any type of Staph. It can be caustic and must be diluted. DO NOT USE IF PREGNANT, ON ANTI-COAGULANTS, HAVE KIDNEY OR LIVER DISEASE, OR HAVE PROSTATE CANCER. NOT SUITABLE FOR CHILDREN UNDER 6.

    Featured Essential Oil: Oregano

Oregano is in all my formulas for cold, flu, and the unknown illness. It is anti-bacterial, anti-viral, and immune-boosting. It may also be used in a massage oil for sore muscles. Diffuse it during cold and flu season. Always dilute if applying to skin or ingesting. DO NOT USE IF PREGNANT as it stimulates menstrual flow. My favorite combination for illness: In a 20 oz. bottle of orange juice or zipfizz, add 5 drops of the following essential oils: oregano, basil, thyme, and lemon; add 3 drops cinnamon bark. Shake well before ingesting and take 3 sips every hour. Refrigerate between sips. It knocks out just about everything in 24 to 48 hours. FOR CHILDREN UNDER 6, ELIMINATE THE CINNAMON BARK.

    Featured Essential Oil: Cypress

Cypress Essential Oil has a rich history of use in both China and the Island of Cyprus. It is said to clear and soothe the mind, ease stress and tension, and to mitigate anger and irritability when diffused. It is also anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial and is used, in combination with Eucalyptus, to relieve congestion in the lungs from illness. It even helps with emphysema symptoms. My favorite use for Cypress Essential Oil takes advantage of its clinically proven ability to increase circulation. Circulation problems are a common cause of diabetic peripheral neuropathy. The small vessels that deliver blood to the nerves are damaged by the high sugar levels. This reduces the amount of oxygen and blood to the nerves. This causes the nerves to react by becoming numb or painful and can lead to foot wounds that won’t heal. I have my diabetic patients use this formula and they report that the pain and numbness signficantly lessens within 3 days. None of them have progressed to diabetic foot ulcers. In a 1 ounce bottle, add olive oil to half full. Add 30-40 drops of Cypress Essential Oil and 20-30 drops Juniper Essential Oil. Fill the rest with Tea Tree Oil and shake. Apply nightly. Let soak in for a few minutes and cover with a loose sock overnight.

Do you want to increase collateral circulation (the growth of additional blood vessels) to the heart to prevent damage in case of a clot to the coronary arteries? Do you want to lessen Angina symptoms? Rub Cypress Essential Oil over your heart nightly.

An Egyptian Medical study has shown Cypress Essential Oil to be hepatoprotective, aid detoxification of the liver, and to reduce cholesterol and triglyceride levels … rub some over the liver.

Do you get leg cramps? Some cramps are due to a buildup of lactic acid, which is cleared away with cypress oil’s diuretic properties. Cypress also has antispasmodic qualities. It inhibits problems associated with spasms, such as cramps and muscle pulls. Cypress oil is effective in relieving restless leg syndrome — a neurological condition characterized by throbbing, pulling and uncontrollable spasms in the legs.

The antibacterial properties of Cypress Essential Oil makes it useful to treat sores, pimples, pustules and skin eruptions. It aids the healing of cuts and wounds.

Due to cypress oil’s ability to stimulate blood flow, it serves as a perfect remedy for varicose veins, as well as those annoying facial spider veins. It also treats cellulite by pulling out the excess fluid and increasing circulation. It can even be used on hemorrhoids.

Do not use Cypress Essential Oil internally or when pregnant.

    Featured Essential Oil: Peppermint

Peppermint Essential Oil is one of the most versatile oils I know of. It’s ability to address a wide range of ailments makes it a valuable addition to your natural medicine cabinet. Massage on sore, painful muscles. Apply to the temples or diffuse for headaches. Diffuse or add to a spray bottle of water to get rid of spiders, flying insects, and even, mice! My favorite concoction for Sore Muscles and Arthritis – gets rid of the pain within 5 minutes is: In a 10 ml Essential Oil bottle, add 5 ml Peppermint Essential Oil, 5 ml Fennel Essential Oil, and 2 ml Wintergreen. Apply directly to painful area. Sensitive persons may need to dilute with a carrier oil. Delete the Wintergreen if you are pregnant or nursing. I’ve massaged the Peppermint + Fennel onto my daughters back during child labor and she was very pleased with the effect! Peppermint should NOT be used if Pre-Labor Pregnant as it stimulates contractions and menstrual flow. DO NOT use Peppermint Essential Oil if you have Epilepsy. It is controversial if Peppermint Essential Oil is effective for indigestion or acid reflux as some individuals experience a worsening of symptoms. When I’m just spraying the outside of the house at doors and windows to eliminate the multitude of insects we have here in Tennessee, the cheaper, non-organic Mint Essential Oil works very effectively. When it’s going in or on my body, or being diffused indoors, I use Certified Organic Peppermint Essential Oil.
